We caught up with International Event Rider Francis Whittington after a successful trip to Saumur at the end of May
12 – 14 April
“It was very cold but lots of fun at Burnham Market International. Brother Bertie came 7th in his first CCI3*S with a super double clear finishing on his dressage. Exellent R (Cato) and Evento both achieved good double clears in the CCI4*S with a handful of time faults.
10 - 12 May
Then we headed off to Chatsworth International Horse Trials with Evento and Exellent R for the CCI4*S and Holiena DHI in the CCI2* S. Sadly Holeina wasn't feeling her usual self after the dressage so we decided to withdraw and save her for another day. Evento and Exellent R were on fantastic form all weekend, both really stepping up to show what exciting horses they are at this level with even more to come in the dressage phase! Evento came 7th and Exellent R just outside the top ten for 11th.
17 – 19 May
Rockingham International was a weekend for the young guns! Monbeg Malvo had another fabulous run and double clear with a smart test to come 4th in a huge 2* section. I truly believe there is so much more to come from this very exciting 7 year old. Following on his heels was the lovely Adrenalin producing a lovely double clear to come 13th at his first time at this level.
22 - 26 May
Which brings us to our fantastic (albeit very tiring) trip to Saumur, France. We took Farndon, owned by Iain and Anne Slater and competed at CCI3*L. The aim was to use this event as valuable experience, give Farndon a taste of travelling abroad but he smashed it! His dressage went well, he gave us a brilliant XC round and finished 3rd overall on a score of 36.5. This was such a brilliant result for him. He tried so hard all week and was a pleasure to ride.
Our success as always is attributed to a whole team of people who make travelling with the horses possible. We get ongoing support from a fantastic group of owners which makes what we do as a team so much fun and my sponsors Saracen Horse Feeds are always there when we need them for advice and help. After discussing our gruelling travelling plans with Lizzie, our dedicated Saracen nutritionist, she recommended Saracen Re-Covery Mash*. What a fantastic move that was!
*RE-COVERY Mash contains a blend of ’Super-Fibres’, known for their superior digestibility and provision of non-heating calories, plus a source of electrolytes to aid re-hydration. The super fibres help to ’top up’ the performance horse’s fibre and water intake and together with electrolytes helps to maintain optimum hydration and thirst response, during periods of travel, warm weather, sweating, intensive training and exertion.
We use it before and after long journeys, staying away for competitions, recovery after the exertions of XC and it really helps to keep the horses hydrated. We’ve noticed big improvements!
We have a few more trips planned for the forthcoming months; Belgium, France and Ireland which we’re very excited about. It’s so much fun to compete abroad. It’s exciting and educational for the horses and lots of fun for the owners! Personally I love it because it brings a new challenge, with different course designers which keep me on my toes. Bring it on!”
